"We’ve listened to our customers and worked with our partners to create new shirts, pants and outerwear that meet flame-resistance standards," said Tom Kiddle, Carhartt Technical Sales Business Manager. "Ever since Hamilton Carhartt created his first overalls for railroad engineers in 1889, we've been committed to protecting workers in hazardous environments."
Carhartt also expects to introduce a new NFPA 21-12-compliant FR coverall in late 2007.
Made for those in the oil, gas and petrochemical industries as well as electricians as and utility workers, the new products join a Carhartt FR line that includes outerwear such as coats, jackets, vests and coveralls in both lined and unlined styles. Lower-body FR protection is afforded with jeans, dungarees, and bib overalls. Woven shirts are also part of the company’s extensive FR product selection.
All Carhartt FR Clothing is treated with flame-retardant chemicals. As a result, fabrics self-extinguish as soon the source of ignition has been removed, whereas untreated natural fibers like cotton or wool may keep burning.
The company’s FR products are also fully detailed with features like Nomex® rib-knit collars, cuffs, waistbands as well as Nomex® zipper tape. FR melamine buttons are used extensively. When linings are added to enhance warmth, FR Modacrylic batting is employed.
However many flame-resistant details are added, Carhartt FR Clothing remains true to its workwear heritage.
“With our FR clothing, workers enjoy the same craftsmanship, durability and comfort they’ve come to expect from Carhartt workwear,” adds Tom Kiddle. “That includes premium fabrics that are garment washed for a smoother, softer finish. A roomy fit. And, legendary Carhartt quality and attention to detail. Workers will know it’s a Carhartt the moment they try on one of our FR products.”
The company’s flame-resistant garments are identified on the outside with a “FR Carhartt" patch. At the store, product tags also distinguish the FR workwear.
Carhartt FR Clothing meets NFPA-70E, ASTM and OSHA standards. It can be industrial or home-laundered. And, it’s guaranteed to be flame-resistant for the useful life of the garment.
