Palin exclaims
In an address to an audience in Hamilton, Ontario, former Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin called the Obama administration "un-American" amid its claims to limit US oil exploration and insisted America should "ramp up development" because "there’s an inherent link between energy and security."
Palin, the 2008 Republican nominee for vice president, campaigned with a slogan of "drill baby, drill" to urge greater oil exploration. She spoke last night at a fundraising dinner to an audience of about 900 people who paid as much as C$1,000 (US$998) to attend.
The Palin speech comes off the back of President Obama's U-Turn on off-shore drilling.
Palin stipulated that the boost in Canada's oil production from the tar sands in Alberta would create more jobs and greater energy independence for North America.
"[America and Canada] can pave the way for conventional, proven sources of energy with nuclear and clean coal technology and on and offshore drilling," Palin told the audience.
The announcement highlights the fear of energy security, and not just in the US; China has answered calls for its growing economy with Chinese oil company Sinopec purchasing a nine percent stake in Canadian company ConocoPhillips. The deal brought China's total oil spending since 2005 to US$64 billion and outlines the nation's continual willingness to pay top dollar for energy security.
